The Parish Church of St Michael's, Cornhill in the City of London

The Guild Church

St Michael's, Cornhill is a medieval parish church, built on the site of the Roman forum of Londinium. Burnt down in the Great Fire of London, the current church was designed by Sir Christopher Wren between 1670 and 1677.

The church has one of the oldest sets of churchwarden's records in the City of London, which are now kept in the Guildhall Library.

Wren's tower was replaced in 1715 with a pinnacled structure (completed in 1722), officially by Wren (who was 90 at the time) but the design bears a strong resemblance to the work of Wren's apprentice Nicholas Hawkesmoor.

St Michael's has a close relationship with the Guild and there are two annual services with particular relevance. These are Guild Sunday in July and the Guild Carol Service in December.

St Michael's is an oasis of beauty and tranquillity in the very centre of the busy City of London and welcomes Guild members at any time. The Rector, The Revd Dr Peter Mullen BA PhD is the Honorary Chaplain to the Guild and frequently attends Court meetings. He takes a great interest in the affairs of the Guild and is legendary for his sermons and graces at various Guild dinners.

The Church has a great musical tradition. As early as the early 1500s the choir sang daily services and seems to have had a high national reputation which continues today under Jonathan Rennert, the Organist and Director of Music. Frequent concerts and recitals are held, many at lunchtime. The organ is famous, dating back to 1684 when the composer Henry Purcell was invited by the Churchwardens to test fly the newly installed instrument.
