THE SIR ALAN COBHAM MEMORIAL AWARD 2007

To the most meritorious student nominated by the Principal of a major training school

CHARLES WATERS

Charlie Waters began training at Flight Training Europe (FTE), Jerez, on 6 November 2006. He settled down to a hard working routine for the initial academic work of the JAA Integrated ATPL(A) course, but it soon became apparent that he always had spare capacity. His dedication and commitment resulted in first time passes in all the JAA examinations with a commendable average of 94.5%. Throughout his studies, he was always prepared to assist other members on his course with academic problems they were experiencing and this, combined with his good sense of humour and engaging personality, made him very popular with his colleagues and the staff. He was elected President of the Student Council, which provides a crucial link between FTE management and the student body as well as playing a central role in the lives and well being of the students, most of whom do not have their families in close proximity and who need to work together to make their time at Jerez both successful and enjoyable.

Charlie's presidency covered a particularly difficult period during which a series of difficult problems arose. The nature of the problems were such as to provide a challenge to both management and students, and without careful resolution would have adversely affected the living and working environment of the campus. Throughout this period he worked closely with the Managing Director and addressed each situation with abundant common sense and his usual good manners. He was always capable of producing solutions which met with the satisfaction of all parties. Of note, these difficulties occurred whilst Charlie was engaged in the very intensive integrated phase of his training, juggling the demands of both ground school and flying. He maintained his sense of humour throughout and was able to absorb the extra pressure without detriment to his own training progress.

On the flying side, Charlie was blessed with considerable natural ability. He was always well prepared for flights and listened carefully to the advice in briefings. As a result, he passed all his progress and skill tests at the first attempt, flying to an above average standard on his CPL Skill Test and completing his flying training with a good first time pass at the Instrument Rating Test.

Charlie graduated from FTE on 25 January 2008 and received the Managing Director's commendation for his outstanding services to the training college. He is now continuing his career in aviation as a First Officer flying Airbus A320s for British Airways. For the standards he achieved and personal qualities he displayed during training, he is awarded the Sir Alan Cobham Memorial Award.
